Action for soccer by young people in Doxey

A very welcome sight at the last meeting of the Doxey Community Association was a delegation of about 7 young people who were looking for some action regarding the football field at the end of Greensome Crescent.

They were fed up of long grass, litter and holes in the pitch. While they were glad to help repair the situation, they realised that they needed official backing.

Since the meeting, there has been much contact between the Community Association and officers and members of the Borough council. The hope is that at least part of the pitch will playable during the summer holidays.

The Community Association exists to work for Doxey people – and that includes young people. If any young person – or group of young people – has an issue to raise, or an idea about how to improve life in Doxey, please come to the next meeting. You could also leave a note at the Sutton Centre and a member of the Community Association will arrange to meet you. Or you could telephone 251622.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday in each month and are also announced in every issue of Doxey Times.

Fun Day 2004

This event was well received last year and those taking part asked to have another fun day this year. It will take place on Saturday, 14 August from 2.00 p.m. on the open ground by the Sutton Centre, Sutton Drive

There will be the traditional races, tug-of-war and parachute games. While many of the events are particularly suited for young people, it promises to be a good day for all the family. Come and join in the fun!

Free drinks for all competitors.

Success with buses

Most readers will know, now, of the new Sunday bus service between Doxey and town which will start on 5 September. Buses will leave Stafford for Doxey at 11.01, 13.01, 15.01 and 17.01. Buses to Stafford will leave Doxey at 11.10. 13.10. 15.10 and 17.10. But check these times nearer the date.

This follows years of pressure from councillors and individuals. Thanks to all who have written letters and campaigned. Now use the bus when it comes or we’ll lose it again!

Bishop Christopher’s visit to Doxey

The Bishop of Stafford, the Right Reverend Christopher Hill, will be presiding at Holy Communion at the Parish Church of St Thomas and St Andrew, Doxey on Sunday 1 August at 10.30 a.m.

All residents and friends of Doxey will be  welcome at the service. There is to be a shared lunch afterwards, when there will be an opportunity to meet the Bishop. This is open to all, but if you would like to take part, please call Helen on 248383.

The occasion will be an opportunity to wish Bishop Christopher well for his new post of Diocesan Bishop of Guildford, which he takes up in the autumn.

Note: There will be no evening services at the Parish Church in August.

Adult learning and leisure classes in Doxey

Stafford College is developing courses in Doxey to start in September. Keep Fit and Watercolour Painting classes
are already running, but the College wants to provide more.

To make sure the classes they put on are of interest the College needs your comments and ideas for classes in Doxey. A leaflet was circulated a few weeks ago. Even though the deadline for return has passed, the college would be glad to hear from you. If you have lost the leaflet or the return envelope or need more information, call 251622.

Doxey Day

A fete with a difference

The Community Association’s July event this year was a bit different from the normal fete. The aim this time was not to raise money, but to celebrate the many and varied activities which take place in our community. All organisations active in Doxey were given a chance to show what they do.

The following mounted stalls or displays

The next meeting will be a social event. All residents of Doxey are welcome to come and share light refreshments: to find out what has been going on or try out new ideas.
