Doxey Times - January 2006
A big thank you to Mark
Eileen Skelton said it beautifully in verse in the Stafford Post just before Christmas. We can’t match her poetic skill, but would like to add our thanks to Mark Smith, members of his family and his friends for the splendid Christmas party they put on for Doxey’s senior citizens. A lot of careful planning and hard work went into making this a very enjoyable event.
Over the years we have come to rely on Mark to organise this event, but he won’t be around for ever. He hopes to be at university next year. So, perhaps now is the time for you to be thinking whether you could lend a hand next year. There is a well established pattern to follow, so all that is needed is a bit of hard work around the time of the event. Even this can be reduced if you get your family and friends to help. There is, of course, scope to introduce new ideas if you wish. To find out more call Mark on 604233.
A real village event
The Christmas tree outside the parish church was a first for some time. It was fitting, then, that the carol singing round the tree, just before Christmas was so well attended.
Over 100 people - of all ages - took part, both regular churchgoers and non-attenders.
After the carols mince pies and mulled wine were served in the hall. There was a last opportunity to view the excellent display of Christmas trees and a collection was taken for the church’s support for work with street children in Colombia
Help the schools which Doxey’s children attend
Most Doxey children attend Doxey Primary or King Edward’s.
The parent teacher associations at Doxey Primary School and King Edward’s High School work hard to raise funds for the two schools to enable them to do even better for the pupils. Two events are coming soon.
Hog roast and pig racing at King Edward’s
Friday, 20 January
at 7.30 p.m.
Tickets £3 in advance. Call Mary on 824339. Includes the hog roast.
Quiz night at Doxey Primary

Recycle your Christmas cards
Everyone’s recycling now. Don’t waste valuable natural resources by putting your Christmas cards in the bin.
Nor do you have to take them to town for recycling. There are three collection points in Doxey where you can leave your Christmas cards. They are:
The William Sutton Centre, Sutton Drive
The Bradbury Rise Stores
St Thomas’ and St Andrew’s Church
The church is open most weekday mornings and for services on Sunday, of course.
The Community Council of Staffordshire is running a competition to find the community which can collect the greatest weight of cards.
Doxey’s parish plan
The drop-in held on 10 December was well attended and work on Doxey’s parish plan has now started.
There are many ways in which you can make a contribution and make your views known about how things should develop in Doxey. Call Mike, who is co-ordinating work on the plan, on 607434.
Panto progress
Rehearsals have started in earnest towards the Easter holiday production of Mother Goose. Applications are being made for financial support and one grant has already been received.
There is still openings for people to help. In particular, singers for the chorus and people to make costumes are required. Contact John on 604233 if you are interested
Doxey Times delivered late?
So, what’s new? It can be frustrating to get your copy of Doxey Times only to find that some of the things advertised in it have already happened. It is, perhaps, worse for people who don’t get Doxey Times at all.
This is happening because there is a shortage of people available to deliver Doxey Times. Sometimes someone will do a double delivery, but this usually means that the second one is done some days after the first. Some deliverers’ normal load is very heavy and they too have difficulty in delivering them all within a short timescale. Some roads, though, may get missed out entirely.
Can you help by delivering Doxey Times? Even 20 minutes a month would be helpful. In particular, deliveries to Doxeyfields would be helpful, but it would also be useful if you could be flexible, to help out when other deliverers are ill or on holiday.
If you can help, please call 251622.

Life support project This provides training in basic techniques for helping a person who has collapsed and is unconscious. The training is provided by a team headed by a local doctor. You can attend two sessions. One deals with adults and older children, the other with younger children and infants. Each session lasts about two hours. More than thirty people from Doxey have taken part so far. More sessions will be held as long as there is a demand for them. Call Joan on 251622 for details of dates and times.
These sessions are based on the assumption that the person you are helping has a clear airway. It has now been decided to organise some extra sessions on how to help a person who is choking. Call Joan as above for details of these.
