Parents welcome at Doxey Fun Day
The fun day will take place again this August, with all the usual races and events and parachute games, but the organisers are hoping that more parents will come with their children this year. It’s a good way of sharing the fun and helping your children to get the best out of the day.
Owing to unforeseen circumstances, the date of the Fun Day has been changed. It will now take place on
Saturday, 20th August
starting at 1.00 p.m.
An afternoon for the young at heart of all ages.
Village Voices – postscript
Another nearly full house watched Mikron’s professional version of the play. While all of the songs from the community play were retained, the story line was quite different in many parts. Mikron have now performed the Doxey play in two separate locations on the Grand Union Canal and will do more than 20 more performances of Village Voices during the summer.
The DVD of the Doxey version of the play will be available shortly. It will be in a shrink-wrapped box with a picture from the play on the outside; nicely presented if you wish to give it as a Christmas or birthday present. All for £3.50. If you would like to order a copy call John Smith on (01785) 604233, before 23 July.
In case you missed the Mikron version of Village Voices, you can see it at Norbury Junction on Tuesday, 23 August at 7.30 p.m. No need to book, they take a collection after the performance. Mikron will be performing the other play in this year’s repertoire – The Wheel of Fortune – twice in our locality in August: at Coton Mill on Monday, the 22nd and at the Crown Inn at High Offley on Wednesday, the 24th. Same time and payment arrangements as for Norbury. Space at Gnosall is tight, so the Doxey Community Association has chosen to run its trip to see this play in Wednesday, 24th. If you would like to join the trip, call 251622.

Clear out day – can you use a cot?
Although on a small scale, this event went well, as usual. People got rid of things they no longer needed, but which were still useful and most of these found new homes. Anything left at the end of the day went to a charity shop with the exception of a wooden cot, because charity shops do not take furniture. It is in good condition and is available at no cost to anyone who could make good use of it. Call 251622.
The next clear out day will take place in the autumn. Look out for details in Doxey Times. If you have found the clear out day useful in the past, please let others know about it. If you have not tried it before, it really is a good way to get rid of things which you never use, but have kept because they are too good to put in the bin. Other people may be looking for just the thing you have sitting in your cupboard.
Many thanks to Mike Turner for organising these events.
Danger!! - 100+ m.p.h. and 25 000 volts
As the summer holidays approach young people will be looking for things to do all day. Doxey Marshes is a good place to fish and seek other amusements. Sadly, some people will be tempted to get there by crossing the railway line.
It hardly needs saying that this is a very dangerous thing to try to do, but parents would be well advised to point out the dangers to their children. There are four tracks to cross. Some trains already travel over them at more than 100 miles an hour and speeds are set to increase over time. In addition there are the power lines overhead.
The transport police have investigated incidents of people trying to cross or playing on the line and are concerned that there could be a fatal accident if this continues.
Play scheme now on
You may have heard that there was to be no play scheme in Doxey during the coming summer holidays. Nigel Barnett and Doxey Parish Council have contributed substantially to making arrangements so that the scheme can go ahead after all. Dates are
Monday 25 July to Friday 19 August, inclusive
Morning sessions will be from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon for 8 – 12 year olds and afternoons from 1.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. for 5 - 7. Look out for posters or in the local press for further information.
Interested in digital photography?
One of the professionals who helped with the Village voices project has offered to provide free instruction in digital photography. What this will involve will depend very much on what people want to learn about, but it could include how to compose and take good pictures, editing on the computer and printing techniques. If you would like to learn more about any aspect of digital photography call 251622.
